I was walking in a dark alley after I finished school. My eyes flecked with gold when the sun was on them. And as the sun set over the mountain, drawing a deep red wound on the sky, there was more than just gold in my eyes, there was anger;for I was cut to the quick by the teacher’s remarks-----the culmination of insults from the teacher, whom we called madame had given me.

I was in the school for the girls. The only girl’s school in the whole entire village. Tuition was almost obligatory in the school. I was poor, poorer than all other girls. “You have to spend another year in the eighth grade if you continue with this result.”  “And if you don’t like that idea, you can transfer out, a school where they accept student’s whose blouse is torn, socks are never clean, and your tunic is tattered.”

Madame shown her large crooked teeth, which was supposed to be a good nature grin. All the students nodded dutifully. Sycophancy was part of the school curriculum. “Ring,Ring......”the school bell reverberated throughout the whole school compound. Students immediately streamed out of the school compound, back to the village.

“She’s a mean old thing. Ugly, smelly.”Usher was speaking. “Her laugh reminds me of donkey-braying.” But in fact, I wasn’t listening, I was staring at the silhouette of the tall pine trees. A full moon was coming, a thing that meant something special to me. Abruptly, I said, “I’ll take the shortcut home” Nevertheless, my friends were used to my sudden whim.

The short cut took me through the oak forest. The crooked, tormented branches of the oak threw twisted shadows across the path. A jackal,a dog like wild animal, howled at the moon; a nightjar called from the bushes. I walked fast, not because of fear, but of urgency and my breath came in short gasp. Something is going to happen.

As I sprinted back home, my limbs were becoming more sinewy, steps became lighter.Refusing dinner, I went to my small room and flung the window open. Moon-beams crept through the window-sill and over my long arm with were now covered with golden furs. My strong nails have shredded the rotten wood on the window-sill. Tail swishing and ears pricked, a leopard came swiftly out of the windows, crossed the open field behind the house, and melted into the shadows.

Being a cheetah now, my senses improved, my eyes could see the slight moving animals, my ears could hear the slightest noise despite in the winter. Bright moonlight bathed through the trees to the path. But I knew where the shadow was the deepest and I beautifully merged with them to avoid being spotted.

Firstly, how to get to madame? Having been there once before for a short drunken visit that started well but ended in a haze not unlike, in it’s texture, for once I now grouped, had only the dimmest memory to go there.

(I mistakenly drank a bottle of rum and got drunk, the vision I had at that time was similar to now except for now was winter, luckily I am able to go there but with the slightest memory now.)

Luckily I somehow remembered when I reached the bakery, I had to turn left. Fortunately, there was enough light to distinguish people from letter boxes. The letter boxes in my embittered view, had warmer personalities than the people, but the people although not notably less taciturn, at least know how to give directions --- if they feel like it. I asked a little nice old lady to where the Cat’s Club was were where I was going to have my lunch, if I ever found it, but perhaps I partially located her by touch, I took only me quarter an hour to calm her down. She pointed down the street and told me to turn right once reached the end. How I wish there was this ‘GPS’ in my era. I turned right too early and went to a pub which I mistook for the Cat’s Club until put right by the man at the counter. Before I could leave, he managed to regale me with his entire repertoire of jokes about kangaroo, koalas, dunnies and walking in the upside down outback. Ha Ha Ha...but I have gotten use to the English’s sense of humor, but preferred to steer clear of it as possible, for fear of laughing too hard

That was recalled in seconds.

Madame was walking home through a dark alley. She has just finished dinner in cat’s club just to foil their husbands’ affiliation. Seconds later, a huge majestic creature appeared in front of her. I lunged myself to her throat. Unfortunately, her screamed did not materialised. This was the perfect murder. No one would ever suspect me of murdering madame. Morning was coming, home was the next destination.  Hours past and Usher and Bindi was coming.

“Quickly or you will be late, or madame would scold you again.”
“I don’t feel like going today”
“Madame wouldn’t be pleased”
“Shall we tell her that you’re sick?”
“Don’t bother, I’m sure it’s going to be a holiday” and I gave her one of my mysterious smile.

I was walking down a dark alley when i heard a scream. It sounded as though someone screaming in terror. With my heart in my mouth, I walked towards the source of the noise, hoping that the perpetrator would not notice me. Hiding behind a corner, I peeked at the scene and gasped.

It was a scene straight from a murder movie. A man was repeatedly thrusting a knife into another man who was bleeding profusely. Seeing this, I immediately charged at the murderer, hoping to stop him. Turns out he was well trained for the job as he dodged my attack. I fell heavily onto the ground. He then prepared to stab me. Luckily my reflexes were fast enough and i dodged before proceeding to attempt another attack on him.

This time I managed to land a punch on him. It disorientated him and I managed to follow up with another punch. I was about to subdue him when he suddenly produced another knife from nowhere. Stabbing me in the leg, he quickly ran off while I fell to the ground, blood gushing out of my leg wound. I lay on the floor, slowly slipping into unconsciousness. The last thing I remembered was a siren piercing the air and paramedics tending to me. Then I blacked out.

I woke up to see a blinding light. Readjusting my sight, I realised I was in the hospital. My whole body was hooked up to a drip and my leg was bandaged up. Putting two and two together, I realised that the paramedics had arrived in time to send me to the hospital. Struggling to sit up, I grabbed a copy of today’s newspaper. Seeing the headline, I smiled to myself.

Crimson Demon

I was walking in a dark alley when I suddenly heard a sound.

‘It is nothing, do not worry,’ I said to myself.

My heart was pulsating, my hands were numb. The noise rang vociferously in my ears, it grew louder and louder, cold sweat broke out as I briskly walked past the dark shadows. The hot night air pounded my skin. The alley was poorly lit by a single light, my stomach was a bag of nerves and my heart was in my mouth as I walked past the light, not knowing what lurked in the shadows.

“Crack!” I flinched.

My legs could not move, after that noise, it fell dead silent. Panting in fear, I looked around me, there was nothing. It was just a wall and the dense forest. Then, something caught my eye. In the bushes, there were two red lights, I scrutinized on the two lights. Then, I thought I saw a face, “It cannot be.” I mumbled. A bright red grin appeared underneath the two black eyes.

“Mother of...” My heart skipped a beat and I immediately ran for it.

Running as fast as my legs would take me, I sprinted for the end of the alley. To my utter horror, the figure suddenly appeared in front of me. I jammed on my ‘brakes’ and stopped in front of it. It was silent and nimble, a sharp pain pierced my head as I knelt down on the ground, I screamed in horror. The screaming sensation in my head blanked out, the weak orange light of the lamp faded out, I had blacked out.

The last scene I remembered was the crimson face of that demon.

I woke up slumped on my bag at the end of the alley, my head was still stuck in a spinning sensation. Recalling the event, I sighed and immediately left the alley.

Was it reality or was I insane?

Well, I will never know for sure. But whatever it was, it is still stuck in my head, the vivid memory of the crimson demon still haunts me up to this day.

Who was it, what does it want?

English Composition

Link to my composition:

In case it does not work, here is the complete composition:

I was walking in a dark alley when I heard an unusual sound.  It sounded eerie and it sent chills down my spine. Beads of perspiration trickled down my body as I vividly recalled the events of the day. That day was the best day of my life until now... Images of the scene flashed through my mind...

The crimson orange colour of the setting sun began to slide down past the horizon gradually. It sent streamers of purple and blue across of the heavens. The fleecy white clouds began to turn orange-pink, the light breeze caressed my face and brushed past my hair. I was appreciating the gorgeous sun getting swallowed up by the looming night as I strolled back from my best friend’s house. Her house was a stone throw’s away from mine.

Suddenly, there was a sign in front of me that said  “Turn here for a better life”. I was consumed with curiosity and acted impulsively, turning into the dark alley. Soon, I heard an unusual sound and it sounded eerie. Now, reality snapped within me.

I was back into reality. After a few minutes, I could hear the yowls and howls of what seemed like a ghost. I stood rooted to the ground ,too frightened to move and was trembling like a winter leaf. After what seemed like eternity, I mustered up my courage and crept closer to the sounds. I told myself not to be so chicken-hearted and after all, what could be so frightening? Little did I know that this day would turn out to be the worst day of my entire life.

I reached out my hands, trembling, but eagar to see what it was. I touched something and when I looked at my hands, it was stained with nothing other than blood. “Ahhh!” I shrieked at the top of my lungs, my heart was in my mouth.  Peering closer, I saw an abandoned baby, spread-eagled on the ground. He was wearing a blue shirt, now stained with blood and khaki cotton shorts. Without much hesitation, I whipped out my Nokia mobile phone and dialled hastily for the police. As I waited patiently, I discovered a birth certificate on the ground! It was swarned with smears of lipstick. I was appalled and had my mouth open in awe. When I investigated further, I noticed that the baby was still alive and breathing. I prayed silently that the paramedics and police would come at any moment. I did not want to see the baby kick the bucket.

After what seemed eternity, the sirens of the police and ambulance wailed in a distance, it reverberated around the vicinity and soon, crowds formed and made a bee-line for the scene. The deserted scene was now packed like sardines. The police and paramedics pushed and shoved through the crowd to help the poor distressed baby. The paramedics, as fast as a cheetah, placed the baby on a stretcher and sent him to the stone’s throw away hospital.

The police cordoned the area and searched the area, trying to find as much evidence as possible. I, as a good citizen, handed the birth certificate to the police so as to aid them in their investigation. The police saw me as a first witness and demanded me to tell them the entire situation. They interrogated me further but after a while, they praised me for being a good citizen.
Without me, they would not even know that there was a baby in distress. I had put the baby to justice and I had just saved an innocent life. I felt really proud of myself that day.
From that day onwards, I promised to promote the acts of kindness to others and hope that one day, they would do the same things as me, which is to care and share for others instead of just thinking about yourself.

I was walking in a dark alleyway when...

Augustine Yap Chang Hiang

I was walking in a dark alley when I heard a low growl, I feared the worst and ran for my life. Leaping and bounding through the darkness, the thing gave chase, barking and panting loudly confirming my worst fears. “Dog, help me!” I cried out, but the only thing that seemed to hear me were the long, white, empty walls which did not help much.

I ran even faster as I heard the panting becoming louder every second, the endless labyrinth of dark corridors kept misleading me to think there was no end. Suddenly...

“Drat and bother.” I said as Mr Lim gave me some homework, I had actually planned to help my mother paint the kitchen door today. I wondered how I could do both, I only had one solution, I had to get home quickly before she came back. But the only way was to go through the ‘Forbidden Land’ and hope not to face the ‘Great Terror’.

I had heard witnesses describing that it was a huge rottweiler the size of a six-year old with huge canines and red eyes that glinted with pure evil. After school, as I stared into the darkness of the alleyway, I gulped, plucked up my courage and stepped into the ‘forbidden land’.

I was walking as quietly as possible when I heard a low growl, I feared the worst and ran for my life.

Suddenly, a flash of white and black and I heard a wail as the ‘Great Terror’ ran away. I turned around and saw two cats, one black, one white, both had big persuading eyes and I felt for them so I picked them up and set off home. I put them in a box and gave them some tuna from a can.

When my mother came home I pleaded with her to let me keep them. She thought for a while before finally saying yes. I was over the moon as now I had two heroes living in my house.
