Who vs Whom

Hi Class,

One of your classmates asked me the difference between 'who' and 'whom'. So, here you go.

'Who' is a subject pronoun, e.g.

Who can the culprit be?

Who gave you this?

This is the man who gave us the money.

Note that each of these sentences directly talks about 'who' - the person who is the doer of the action.

'Whom' is an object pronoun, e.g.

Whom did you get this from?

This is the man whom we got the money from.

Note that each of these sentences doesn't directly talk about the doer of the action but other people, e.g. 'you' in sentence 1, and 'we' in sentence 2.

Cheers,

Miss Esha
