Importance of PACC

Importance of PACC

1) Why is it important to apply "PACC" when communicating in different social situations?

It is important to apply PACC when communicating in different social situations as for a conversation, there must first be a purpose. Without a purpose, a conversation would not go anywhere and the person would not know how or what to say. For the audience, it determines the tone, whether is it formal or informal. The content and context of the conversation play an important part in the situation, this determines the subject of the conversation and how the person will contribute to it. The content will  be what the person will be saying.

Model Answer: It is important to apply PACC when communicating because the register (formal or informal) will depend on the audience. Tone depends on purpose and context. So, we will not be able to communicate effectively using the right tone and register if we are unaware of the purpose, audience and context .

2) If a majority of your classmates hold a certain view about a controversial topic, while you hold an opposing view, how would you convey your thoughts politely?
My tone would be a calm and gentle one and I would tell my friends my views and opinions politely, using some of the discourse markers. The register has to be formal

Model answer: If I oppose a certain view, then I must let the whole class know in a polite manner. The register needs to be formal and tone should be firm yet respectful. (not offending or demeaning). For content, phrases like “I beg to differ”, “In my humble opinion” may be used. Proper reasons should be provided. Last but not the least, we must listen to what the others have to say.

3) What are the possible repercussions if tone and register are used wrongly?
The person whom you are speaking to might get offended or too stressed out as the matter may not be that serious, but you are conveying the message as if it is very important. End result will be chaotic.

Model answer: If tone and register are used wrongly, the end result of the discussion, may be disastrous. We need to keep in mind that even though we may hold our different view points from the rest of the classmates, we need to be respectful, polite yet firm. We cannot under any circumstances hurt or demean others. (In this case our friends) So, the discussion may end in a fight/quarrel, which in turn will damage relationships.
